Factors regulating human sebum production in acne

The goal of our research is to determine the mechanisms by which retinoids induce apoptosis in human sebaceous glands and cancer cells. We have identified a protein mediator of the apoptotic cascade and are examining alternative ways to induce this protein without the use of retinoids which can be teratogenic. Our translational studies use both cell culture and samples from patients treated with retinoids for their severe acne.
