What is FRED?
FRED is a Faculty Research Expertise Database of investigators at the Penn State University and The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. It is a searchable electronic database that acquires, maintains, and provides information regarding the research interests and publications of the investigators.
What Does FRED Do?
FRED provides a directory of investigators at Penn State University and The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center who are involved in basic and clinical research that is fundamental to the promotion of better health and the improved diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. FRED identifies investigators having expertise in designated topic areas and provides their publication information.
Why Was FRED Developed?
FRED was developed to foster research collaboration among investigators in the College of Medicine, colleagues at Penn State University's other campuses, and elsewhere throughout the scientific community. FRED will thereby facilitate the development of new interdisciplinary research programs that require the synergy of investigators with expertise in diverse areas of the basic biomedical/behavioral sciences and clinical medicine.
How Does FRED Work?
FRED uses an extensive vocabulary of biomedical research keywords known as MeSH. These keywords are assigned by professional catalogers at the National Library of Medicine to categorize each publication in the MEDLINE database. Major MeSH subject headings assigned to publications by our investigators are used as expertise terms. Our investigators can change the terms assigned to them to better describe their research expertise. These data are then used to dynamically generate faculty web pages to convey information about our faculty and their research.
Who Developed FRED?
FRED was developed by Penn State University, specifically The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center's Information Resources and Technology department and Office of Research Affairs. The project team responsible for developing FRED was under the leadership of Dr. Russell Scaduto and included Steve Harris, Steve Burns, David Welliver, and Jon Roberts. Development was funded in part by the Lloyd Huck Institute for Life Sciences. For additional information about FRED, contact us.
